Carnival on the Costa Brava
Carnival 2018 Costa Brava
Carnival is one of the most celebrtaed festivities around the world! On the Costa Brava, Girona it is celebrated with street paradres with people in fancy Carnival costumes, dancing to the rhythm of the music. In many towns on the Costa Brava and all over Catalonia, the Rei Carnestoltes (Carnival King) starts the festivities with a speech urging everyone to have fun for a few days. The parades, with floats and elaborate costumes that have taken months to prepare, are a wonderful spectacle that is worth swwing! Though the dates of the Carnival differes in every town, you will have 10 days, because it has started yesterday, on February 8 and will last till February 18! For an amazing stay on the Costa Brava, BE APARTMENT offers you the most elegant Luxury Apartments in various towns of the Coast.
Apart from the festivities and fancy outfits, Carnival celebration is also closely associated with gastronomy. According to the tradition, Carnival begins on the last Thursday before Lent, called Dijous Gras (literally, Fat Thursday), a day when people eat omelette and botifarra (Catalan sausage) or egg botifarra. Traditionally, neighbours would organise feasts in the street before the fasting of Lent began. These collective feasts are still organised in some towns today as part of the Carnival! In Vidreres and Capmany, for example, they are celebrated by eating the Ranxo together, a kind of meat stew with different ingredients. In Agullana, the feast of the Xuia takes place, involving a parade around the town where the ingredients are collected to prepare the traditional botifarra and bacon omelettes (xuies), which everyone eats as an afternoon snack.
The days of crazy Carnival celebrations are brought to an end with the burial of the sardine, bringing to an end the excesses of the festive days. In many towns they say farewell to the Rei Carnestoltes (Carnival King) in a rather peculiar way, by burning the figure on a bonfire. As he burns, his final will and testament (a satirical criticism of society) is read out as the last hurrah of a festivity that will be back again next year.
