The Center Pompidou, created by Renzo Piano and Richard Rogers, is a marvel of 20th century´s architecture, recognizable by its exterior escalators and huge colorful pipes. The building houses the National Museum of Modern Art, a world reference for its art collections of the 20th and 21st centuries. The Center Pompidou was opened in 1977, it is a place dedicated to modern art in all its forms: painting, sculpture, cinema, literature, music, etc. Also known as the Beaubourg center, it is located on San Martin Street, one of the oldest in Paris, its typical gray Parisian aspect contrasts the modern architecture of the The Center Pompidou museum, made of air ducts, escalators and red pipes on the façade. The building is the 3rd most visited place in Paris after the Eiffel Tower and the Louvre! The appearance of the museum caused great controversy during the first years of its life and came to be called "Our Lady of the Pipe", for its aspect of building without walls where all the structures are visible.
The Center Pompidou is divided into 6 floors, with various exhibition halls, both permanent and temporary, where you can admire Matisse, Picasso, Miró and Kandinsky. The works of the famous artists are distributed in 2 spaces: the modern period from 1905 to 1960 (Matisse, Picasso, Dubuffet) and the contemporary period from 1960 to the present day (Andy Warhol, Niki de Saint Phalle, Anish Kapoor). The modern art works of the Center Pompidou place it at the height of the Tate of London and the MoMA of New York!
In addition to the permanent collections, internationally renowned exhibitions are organized throughout the year on the top floor, where you can also enjoy an exceptional panoramic view of the center of Paris and its rooftops! The Center Pompidou also has a public library and a music research center, conference rooms, cinemas, shops and a restaurant on the terrace. The square of the building is also important, as it hosts special events and is always full of young people, families with children, tourists and artists.
The ticket to the Center Pompidou varies between 11€ and 14€, depending on the season. Young people from 18 to 25 years old pay only 10€ and for people under 18 years old the entrance is free.
