Christmas is coming and so is one of the greatest traditions: the Plaza Mayor Christmas Market, which is back to celebrate the festive season with all those who come and visit its 104 stands!. This edition brings some important changes, such as the new image of the stands: a triangular roof that will be decorated with Christmas ornaments and change its exterior and interior lighting. All of this is to mark the 4th centenary of Madrid’s most emblematic square!
In the 17th century, Santa Cruz Square hosted a Christmas market where fruits and vegetables could be bought, as well as decorations and presents. In the 19th century, its venue was established in this place and a sales regulation was drawn up. Since then, Plaza Mayor was the market that sold turkeys, nougat and sweets, whilst Santa Cruz Square focused on stands with Nativity Scene figures, Christmas musical instruments, toys and decorations. In the 1980s, the awnings were replaced with small houses, an important change that has remained the same till the present day. It is an event organised by the Plaza Mayor Christmas Market Association.
The Plaza Mayor Christmas Market will be opened till December 31. Do not miss this opportunity to enjoy Madrid in the winter and get to know the city better with Homes in Blue!
